E | "...For his latest series, he was inspired by, among other things, the picturesque Citadel Park in Ghent with its rare trees and rock formations. Initially designed at the end of the 19th century in the English landscape style on the site of an old citadel, the city park remains a green lung in 2025, offering a place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Particularly intrigued by the scenographic structure of this picturesque park with its vistas and romantic spaces, Kevin Vanwonterghem translates these fragments into his drawings. Each image is carefully constructed. He always seeks a certain friction in the viewing experience by combining depth and atmosphere with two-dimensional lines and planes, which allow the viewer's gaze to wander alternately between the “drawn” and the “drawing”. He likes to play with the tension between realism and fiction, in order to take the viewer into an imaginary space that becomes almost tangible." Ingrid Van Hecke - 2025

NL | "...Zo liet hij zich voor zijn nieuwste reeks onder meer inspireren door het pittoreske Gentse Citadelpark met zijn zeldzame bomen en rotspartijen. Initieel ontworpen op het einde van de 19de eeuw in de Engelse landschapsstijl op de restanten van een oude citadel, is het stadspark anno 2025 nog steeds een groene long om te ontspannen en even te ontsnappen uit de drukte van de stad.
In het bijzonder geïntrigeerd door de scenografische opbouw van dit pittoreske park met haar doorkijkjes en romantische ruimtes, vertaalt Kevin Vanwonterghem deze fragmenten naar zijn tekeningen. Elk beeld is zorgvuldig geconstrueerd. Hij zoekt steeds naar een zekere frictie in de kijkervaring door dieptewerking en atmosfeer te combineren met tweedimensionale lijnen en vlakken, die de blik van de kijker alternerend laat dwalen tussen het ‘getekende’ en de ‘tekening’. Hij houdt ervan om te spelen met de spanning tussen realisme en fictie, om de kijker te kunnen meenemen in een denkbeeldige ruimte die bijna tastbaar wordt." Ingrid Van Hecke - 2025
